First Time Whale Watching in Victoria? Here’s Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

Your complete practical guide to booking, preparing, and making the most of your first tour on the Salish Sea

If you’ve decided whale watching is on your Victoria itinerary but aren’t quite sure what to expect, you’re in the right place.

For many first-time guests, the questions are simple: How do you book? Where do you go? What should you bring? What happens if the weather changes? And how does the Whale Guarantee actually work?

Step One: Choosing Your Tour

Eagle Wing Tours operates year-round from Fisherman’s Wharf in Victoria, BC, with tours that vary by season, duration, and vessel type.

From December through April, our spring shoulder season tours run for 3-3.5+ hours aboard our semi-covered luxury catamarans: a great option for first-time guests, offering a comfortable mix of open-air viewing and indoor shelter. From May onward, the full range of tours opens up, including 3.5 to 4+ hour day tours, sunset tours, and our open boats for guests who prefer a more immersive, open-air experience.

Step Two: Making Your Booking

Booking in advance is always a good idea, especially during spring and summer when tours fill quickly. You can book online at any time or contact us directly for help choosing the right fit.

One important step before the day of your tour: complete your e-waiver online in advance. Transport Canada requires a guest manifest for every departure, and filling it out ahead of time makes check-in much quicker and smoother when you arrive.

Step Three: What to Bring

Our vessels are well equipped, so you don’t need to bring much. Here’s what we recommend:

• Warm layers: thermals, fleece, and a wind- or water-resistant outer layer
• Closed-toe shoes with good grip (no sandals or flip flops)
• A hat and gloves (we provide woolly hats, gloves, blankets, sunglasses, sunscreen, and binoculars on board)
• A camera or phone, plus a reusable water bottle
• Any motion sickness medication you prefer, taken at least one hour before departure

Step Four: Arriving on the Day

Fisherman’s Wharf is located at 12 Erie Street, Pier #2, about a 10 to 15 minute walk from Victoria’s Inner Harbour. Paid parking is available on-site and on nearby streets, or you can take the Victoria Harbour Ferry water taxi from downtown.

Plan to arrive 30+ minutes before departure to check in. The crew will walk you through safety information and make sure you’re comfortable before heading out. As a bonus, Eagle Wing guests receive 10% off at most food vendors on the wharf, so it’s worth arriving a little extra early to grab something before you board.

What If I Get Seasick?

Our vessels are designed for stability and comfort, but a little preparation goes a long way if you’re prone to motion sickness. Take your preferred medication at least one hour before departure, have a light meal beforehand, and spend time on the outer deck where fresh air helps.

We stock ginger candies on board, and our crew are experienced at helping guests who feel unwell. If you’re not feeling great, let someone know early.

What If the Weather Turns?

Guest safety always comes first. If conditions affect your departure, we’ll contact you directly with your options. If your tour is cancelled due to weather, you’ll be offered a full rebook or refund. The captain makes the final call on the day.

What About the Whale Guarantee?

The Original Whale Guarantee Program is exactly what it sounds like: if you don’t see whales on your tour, you come back out again for free, as many times as needed, with no expiry date, no standby, and no hidden fees.

A practical tip: if you’re staying in Victoria for a few days, book your tour earlier in your trip rather than on your last day. That way, in the unlikely event you need to use the Whale Guarantee, you still have time to return while you’re in town. Can Everyone Come?

Anyone of any age and ability is welcome on board. Age two and under ride for free, and anyone under 19 just needs a parent or guardian to sign the waiver before check-in.
