AWESOME TOUR! Every once and a while we hope for that National Geographic experience where it feels like it could not get any better. The scene was set with excellent weather: sunny skies, flat water, no wind, & lots of wildlife. A shoreline cruise from Victoria ‘s Inner Harbour out to Pedder Bay, William Head, Bentick Island, & ending up at Race Rocks ecological reserve. ALL 4 species of seal and sea lions: Harbour Seals, Elephant seals, California Sea Lions, & Steller Sea Lions. Three Bald Eagles also were there including one immature eagle (all brown). No sign of Ryan Murphy the eco-custodian at the lighthouse today. Clear view south towards the Olympic mountains made for a world class stop on our tour. Sometimes it pays off to be fashionably late on scene with the whales: today we had about 8-9 Transient Killer Whales, and only two boats when we got there…everyone else had gone home. Our patience paid off, the whales took chase on a hapless Harbour Porpoise. BAM! WHAM! SWOOSH! The whales effortlessly leaped out of the water, sometimes upside down, on top of their prey. The entire process from hunting, to chasing, to sharing their food was all told about 30-40 minutes. Off they were again in a south westerly direction towards Port Angeles in the middle of the Juan de Fuca Strait. You cannot put a price on this experience, one out of every 15-20 transient experiences & you might get lucky enough to witness this sort of raw nature………………wow…………..wow…………….wow….
