July 5 6:30pm – Sunset tour
One of our first true sunset tours of the season. Flat calm seas we took a high speed run out of Victoria and took a quick stop for a bald eagle and harbour seals at Trial Island. Really active group of harbour seals. Lots of chatter and growling amongst them. Probably not very happy the tide came in and was washing them off the rocks. It was kind of funny to watch actually. From there we headed out and stopped at the border of Canada and USA in the Haro Strait. across from Lime Kiln State Park and encountered Blackberry J-27 cruising along the border forging for some salmon. Lots of deep dives but very nice sightings and J-39 Maco not far behind following along. We weren’t quite able to figure out who they were as they weren’t coming out of the water far enough for us to see their dorsal fins. From there we slowly worked our way towards San Juan Island and dropping our hydro phone every once in awhile and getting some awesome vocalization and with very nice light as the sun was setting. For the last few minutes we hung out with J-26 Mike who was just cruising around and a few females. They were all busy doing long dives and forging. Then we came back just as the sun was setting and back into Victoria for a 32 nautical miles round trip.
