1st Superpod of the year !!!!! Plus brand new calf in Lpod – L119 !!!

The morning departure started out like any other day as we decided to head out towards Race Rocks Lighthouse to see all the Sea Lions, Seals and Elephant Seals !!! On the way out to Race, we got a call about two large groups of Orcas inbound off of Sooke Harbour. Very exciting news :) As we approached Race Rocks, the first group of whales were seen inside of Race Passage. Upon close inspection we were delighted to see all of Jpod and Kpod in a tight resting pattern swimming slowly Northeast towards Victoria Harbour !!! Of course L87 (Onyx) was also present in this group !! After spending only a few minutes with the J’s & K’s we noticed another large group of Whales Southwest of Race Passage by only a mile or so… We quickly headed out to see if this was Lpod – the rest of our Southern Resident Community. As we approached the group, we saw lots of Lpod whales including L41 (Mega) and the rest of his family :) So exciting… The first true Superpod of the year !!!!! Two massive resting groups inbound from Race Rocks. Within minutes of hanging out with Lpod we noticed a very small whale swimming with L77 (Matia). This would be L77′s second calf in two years; the first calf did not survive the first year :( Lets hope little L119 has better luck. We followed the whales to Constance Bank as they stayed in a tight resting formation the whole time we were with them. J’s & K’s to the North, while Lpod stayed a few miles to the South. Amazing day on the ocean :) First Superpod of the year, plus a brand new calf in Lpod.. L119 :)
