Transients off of Vancouver!
This morning’s trip turned into an epic ride way up to Vancouver. Our first report of the day, pointed us north to search for a gray whale spotted in Boundary Bay. We started out of the Victoria inner harbour and stopped to see harbour seals at Trial Island, then a pair of Eagles at Chain Island, then full speed to East Point off of Saturna Island to sea Steller Sea lions. Just as we were departing, we saw a nice group of harbour porpoise feeding in the tide line.
At that point, we received notification from our Vancouver whale watching cohorts that they had just found a group of Transient killer whales swimming in the middle of Georgia Straight. These guys sounded a lot more interesting to than the lone grey whale, so off we went in search of the orca! We had some fantastic views of this family of 5 transients as they swam slowly, then after 40 minutes, they started to pick up speed. We tried to keep up to their 10 knot swim, but it was taking us even further from Victoria! So we turned back and encountered Dall’s porpoise that raced our boat off of the entrance to Active Pass!
Fun trip and worth the 109 nautical miles. Lots of smiles on board today!
