Saturday May 19th 10 am whale watching tour
A glorious day in the neighbourhood. Another day without any real whale sightings information with the exception of a few Minke whales (cousin Mikes) at and or near Hein Bank, salmon Bank and Eastern Bank: all close by to San Juan Island, WA. We set off to the west in the event we could pick something up on our way to race Rocks reserve where we had an awesome display of Steller Sea Lions, harbour seals, and some elephant seals…with an extremely large male (about 5,000lbs). The weather was divine and the network was still only presenting Minke whales, so we decided to go off and search into the deep south and then headed east in hopes of picking something along the way over to those Stinky Minkes! in our travels we encountered several harbour porpoise feeding in flat pristine water conditions, the Olympic mountains and port Angeles up close and personal–spectacular scenery. After a comprehensive collaborative search with several other companies and our other company boat we ended up with a very elusive minke whales. The Minke had one thing on its mind and that was ‘working the area’ in search of food: what this means is an animal that will surface 2-3 times and then disappear for a period of about 4-5minutes and surface somewhere very different from the last sighting…this does make things difficult but one can appreciate that wild animals will do what they wish. Loads of information, many different species of marine mammals–a great trip.
