Juvenile Humpback off of Active Pass
Without any reports of killer whales near Victoria, we ventured far north in search of a humpback whale spotted near East Point on Saturna Island. With calm conditions and lots of sun, we headed full speed for 50 nautical miles to the last sighted location. When we arrived, we couldn’t find the little guy. We searched for 40 minutes, trying to sigh this humpback whale’s spout, something that is usually obvious from miles away. Luckily, another vessel in the area spotted him and shared the tip with us. We had a great view of this little humpback as he cruised north, right through the ferry traffic lane as the BC Ferries ran and forth from Tsawassen. On the return ride home, we stopped at Boiling Reef to a cacophony of Stellar Sea Lions who were jostling and growling at eachother in a long, drawn-out brawl. Quite a fun group that made us feel like we were watching a BBC Wildlife documentary!
