T30′s right off the Chain Islands !!!!

The afternoon departure had two groups of whales in our region; J & K Pods way South of Discovery Island near Dungeness Spit, and a small group of 5 Transients (T30′s) in the Oak Bay area !!!! By 2:30 pm, the winds had come up to 30 kts. out of the West and seas were building to 5-6 feet out where the Resident Whales were located. After spending 30 minutes searching for the J’s and K’s in the big seas, we decided to head for calm waters near Oak Bay to spend time with the Transient Killer Whales. The five Whales were tightly grouped as they swam slowly to the Southwest. At one point, a large container ship came right past us and provided a massive wake for the Whales to surf in… Brilliant view of high speed swimming :) We followed the T30′s til they were 3 nm Southeast of Trial Island before we broke off and went over to the Chain Islands to view the Seals, Bald Eagles, Cormorants, Pigeon Guillemots and Harlequin Ducks. Cold, windy and choppy seas this afternoon :( Where did the sun go ???
