J-pod was seen on the West side of San Juan Island all day today, therefore, I decided to start the afternoon tour out West at Race Rocks Lighthouse. At Race we saw lots of Steller and California Sea Lions hauled out on the rocks to the South of the Lighthouse. Half a dozen Elephant Seals and 30-40 Harbour Seals were laying on Helicopter Rock !!!! Very strong incoming current coming through Race Passage today (4-5 kts.) From Race Rocks we traveled East towards San Juan Island where we picked up the first Orcas just a little North of Limekiln Lighthouse. The whales were spread from Andrews Bay all the way North past Kellet Bluff on Henry Island. During the next hour or so that we were on scene, we had great visits with L87 (Onyx), the J14′s (except for J30 “Riptide” – now presumed dead), J16′s, J22′s and the J17′s. We left the whales approaching Turn Point at 1800 hrs. On the ride home we encountered waves of 3-4 feet and light rainshowers near Sidney and Darcy Island !!!!
