For this afternoon trip we decided to head out west. After having searched all over the eastern banks without seeing whales, we thought we’d have better luck to the west. We squirted the coastline to Race Rocks Ecological Reserve to view 3 species of pinnipeds: Pacific Harbour Seals, Elephant seals and Stellar Sea lions. The most active of the 3 were the stellars who were making quite the commotion on the rocks. The highlight was when one jumped off a rock at 6 feet and did a huge belly flop, complete with a big splash!

As we were exiting the reserve we heard a report of humpback whales 5 miles south. We proceeded south, but the further we went, the large the sea state grew. We ended up in 4 four swell, with some waves cresting at 7 feet! We arrived to view to humungous humpback whales cruising along, totally un-bothered by the large waves. I wish I could have said the same, as the longer we sat in the following seas, the more green some of our passengers started to feel. We passed around complimentary ginger candies to calm the stomach’s of the passengers, and soon they were smiling again. After everybody exhausted their memory cards in their digital cameras, we headed home.
