Southern Resident Killer Whales need Chinook Salmon to survive: Save the Salmon, Save the whales!
Kenneth Balcomb is the senior scientist from the Center for Whale Research in Friday Harbor. He explains the connection between the Southern Resident killer whales (orcas) and chinook salmon. 90% of the summer diet for the whales is chinook salmon. There is a tight correlation between a healthy population of salmon and killer whales. When the salmon are abundant, the whales thrive. When the salmon are in short supply, the Southern Resident orca population suffers dearly.
The future of the Southern Resident killer whales depends on abundance of prey availability—>SALMON!!!
