The afternnoon tour took us way out to the West of Sooke Harbour… At 1500 hrs. we picked up J-Pod 13 nm Southwest of Race Rocks Lighthouse !!! Our first encounter was with L87 (Onyx). For the past 2 years L87 has been traveling with J-Pod, and is now considered an honorary member of this group !!!! Previous to that time, he was hanging out with K-Pod from 2005 to 2009 after his mom L32 (Olympia) died in 2005
After spending quality time with L87 we ventured over to the J-14′s (Samish and her 4 kids). Unfortunately her oldest son, J30 (Riptide), has not been seen for a while now !!! Very concerning for all of us as he is only 17 years old this year; and is considered an up and coming male in his pod !!! Ken Balcomb from the Center for Whale Research has told everyone to keep an eye out for J30 over the next few weeks !!!! At 1630 hrs. we left J-Pod 9 nm SW of Sheringham Point Lighthouse; all whales were still headed West towards the Pacific Ocean traveling at approx. 4.5 kts. On the way home we stopped in at the Bedford Islands to see a pair of Bald Eagles and then on to Race Rocks Lighthouse to see all the Seals, Steller Sea Lions and Elephant Seals !!!! Great day on the water !!!!!
