November 14th, 2011 1:00 pm Trip

We started off the trip by heading South over Constance Bank in search for Humpback Whales that were seen during the previous few weeks… After searching the area we continued out to Race Rocks where we saw lots of Sea Lions, Harbour Seals and 3 Elephant Seals !!!!! Continuing West we stopped in at Whirl Bay at the Eagle’s Nest, where we encountered two mature Bald Eagles soaring above the Bay searching for food. From the Eagle’s nest we continued Westwards towards the town of Sooke, where I spotted a Humpback Whale a few miles Southwest of Sooke Harbour !!!!! After spending 25 minutes with this unidentified animal we traveled South where we stumbled across a very spread out J and K pod !!!!! The animals were foraging as they traveled slowly to the West. Conditions were perfect as we had flat calm water, sunny skies and warm temperatures :)

What a great day to test out a ‘new’ trip blog concept for the upcoming 2012 season

What an awesome fall day. Weather could not be any more perfect, with flat water, sunny skies with a hint of cloud cover here and there. We had an amazing experience with two Humpback whales near a place called Hein Bank in WA. This is an area which is about 3-4 miles off shore of San Juan Island, WA., and the water depth is about 20-60 feet deep. after a wonderful time with a mother and her calf playing at the surface, doing cartwheels, tail lobs and pectoral fin slaps we made our way about 20 miles to Race Rocks Ecological reserve (lighthouse). Along the way we crossed paths with some Harbour Porpoise feeding in the Juan De Fuca strait. At Race Rocks we observed Steller sea lions, Harbour Seals, one Elephant seal and a handful of California sea lions hauled out on the rocks and in the water feeding. As the sun was stooping lower on the horizon it was time to depart and make our way back home. A trip that was scheduled to be 3 hours turned into an almost 4 hour adventure on the Salish Sea.

Yahooo!

Breaching Humpbacks, breaching Orca and playful Porpoise! Oct 19

Today’s trip was what I wish all our trips were like! We started off heading towards Race Rocks and viewed a very energetic group of Stellar sea lions on North Race Rock and an even livelier group on of California Sea lions on Great Race. As we started out towards the East, we came accross a pair of humpback whales and within minutes they drastically picked up their intensity. At first they started pectoral fin slaps, then they did headstands and slapped their tails continuously for 10 minutes! Following this “warm-up,” they proceeded to somersault, cartwheel and breach almost non-stop for the next hour! They were rolling on their sides, swimming upside down and thrusting both pectoral fins high in the air. It was actually quite hard to depart, since it was so amazing and spectacular. Eventually we had to say good-bye as there still remained orcas to view!

We blasted over to San Juan Island and came across J and K pods who also broke out into activity! Just as we arrived it started first with the calves, then some of the adults also started breaching a playing about! We were fully amazed at our luck today. After another amazing hour of killer whale breach activity, we started are way home, only to encounter a playful group of Dall’s porpoise! These porpoise chased us around and played in our wake for a good 5 minuets before being distracted by waves heading in the other direction. We were truly grateful for such amazing animal encounters today!

Cannot get enough wildlife in the Salish Sea. October 7 10 am tour

Friday, October 7 was a typical glorious autumn October day and beautiful on the water with flat conditions and not a breath of wind. With sunny skies and no reports of whales before leaving Victoria we were the ones who had to find the whales. We found the killer whales just a little south of Constance Bank who were very spread out traveling north east. Over time it was apparent that we had several animals spread out over 5 to 6 miles. We ended up finding most of J pod, excluding the J 16s which includes Slick and her family, near Seabirds point off discovery island very much traveling toward San Juan for the afternoons tour. After leaving a glorious whale show off Oak bay flats with fast and very active killer whales vocalizing, beautiful groupings traveling close together and flatwater we then chose to head west towards race rocks where we encountered seven humpback whales over the span of about six or 7 miles. Over the previous two days we came across 7 to 9 humpback whales and three days ago came across 15 humpback whales spread out over several miles way to the west past Sooke BC. Little groups of humpbacks were seen along with a great show with a nice group of Dall’s porpoise. They were very playful and came right up to the boat. Totally awesome! We then went to race rocks ecological reserve of course so we could top off the experience with several species of sea lions barking up a storm and smelling awful as usual. An inspiring experience but definitely comprehensive and memorable for the guests.

Superpod near Race Rocks

Our Thanksgiving sunday tour was a bit delayed departure due to all the busy-ness about town with the marathon, but once we got our boats off the docks, everybody was happy they waited the extra minutes! We first headed to Race Rocks to see the amazing wildlife: the harbour seals and sea lions. Without disappointing, they put on a great show as they jostled each other about the rocks!

Next, we headed to an area where 2 humpbacks were sighted and we were delighted with many photo opportunities of their huge backs and tail flukes. They swam around in a near perfect circle as they dove down, feeding repeated in the same spot.

We cruised over to the killer whales, and realized all the whales were spread out over many miles. It took us a bit of time to find a nice tight group of whales, but Nugget and her family seemed to be frolicking and playing. We slowly approached and watched as L55 matriline joyfully made its way West. This family includes: Nugget (L55), her two daughters are Kasatka (L-82) and Lapis (L-103) and her son is Takoda (L-109). Nugget became a grandmother when Kasatka had her first calf, Finn (L-116), in August 2010. Nugget also had a new calf L-118, which remains unnamed until it has survived a full year. After a full hour of watching this family, we cruised over to find the
“cookie crew” (L22 and her offspring) , Oreo, Dublestuff and Cookie swimming and breaking along with along with J27 and K26 (Lobo). It was a fantastic night!

Great sunset trip with J and K pods!

Our afternoon trip started out with fantastic flat water, but it was slightly overcast around Victoria and to the East (where we had reports of killer whales). We could see it was beatiful sunshine to the west, so headed out toward Race Rocks first, so our passengers could enjoy a bit of sunshine and top up their vitamin D :) At Race Rocks eco reserve we found many Steller and California sea lions, Pacific harbour seals and even a majestic Bald Eagle sitting atop Helicopter Rock (very rare for this time of year!). Next we proceeded East through an area whee we have been sighting many humpback whales. Without finding any in our first search area, we received a call of 2 humpbacks sighted near to the killer whales, so we headed towards Kelp Reef for a viewing of 2 amazing humpbacks. One of them arched its back and showed us its fluke, we identified her as BCX1057 and her calf. Next we headed over towards Spieden Island to view the newest member of K pod: K44 with his mother K27 (aka Deadhead). Next we viewed a couple large males (K25 and K26) and many more K pod females. On our way back to Victoria, we stopped by to see J pod as well (who was traveling a couple miles behind K pod). We first viewed J27 (Blackberry) who was off on his on and then we came across the “cookie crew” J22 (Oreo) and her offspring, J38 (Doublestuff) and J38 (cookie). It was a great evening and we came back to  wonderful sunset!

Wow! August 4 230 tour

Thursday, August 3 230 departure lots of whales northbound traveling rather quickly with a very strong floodtide. With each floodtide the water rises bringing nutrient rich waters with it in from the Pacific Ocean replenishing the food supply in the Salish sea twice a day. We headed up to J and K pod and arrived on scene near Mouat point and Navy channel in between Maine Island and Pender Island. The orca animals were grouped up in a bay milling playing socializing and vocalizing when finally they decided to progress in a Northwest direction up the coast of Maine Island towards the entrance of active pass where we had a most exceptional experience with whales floating at 3 to 4 knots on a floodtide around the corner. They were all breaching tale lobbing spy hopping swimming quickly and close together. It was a fantastic fantastic experience. On our way up we did make a very quick stop at zero rock where we had an adult bald eagle on top of the starboard day beacon and some Pacific Harbor seals on the rocks at the base of it. A great trip!

Canadian whales!!! August 4 10am tour

August 4 10 AM tour with foggy conditions out West in the Juan de Fuca Strait. We have reports of whales on the west side of San Juan Island unfortunately commercial fishing is opened which means a lot of the food supply is going to be removed from the area which means the killer whales are going to have to be resourceful and go somewhere else to find food. History has shown us that when commercial fishing is open the whales leave. We fortunately acquired information that the whales in the fog out west were coming towards Victoria. A lot of the boats were unsuccessful trying to locate them but shortly out of the Harbor we had a report of them off the Victoria waterfront so in order to view Canadian whales we went straight there and had an amazing show with most of L pod 30 animals: L2 grace and her family L 26 Baba and her family as well as Ino L54 and her family. After we had an amazing whale show we left the orca who are still headed towards San Juan Island. We went west towards race rocks into the fog where we had an excellent stellar sea lion show with Harbour seals pigeon guillemots one elephant seal. From there we ran out of the fog along the shoreline through Pedder Bay, William head and stopped off of Witty’s Lagoon to engage in some birdlife where we had an amazing feeding frenzy with marine birds and were able to get close enough to see the fish underneath the surface. Then unfortunately we had to come home absolute totally awesome tour!

Superpod. August 3 10 am tour

August 3 10 o’clock departure we left Victoria inner Harbor and headed west to Pedder Bay and William head, then around the corner into Whirl bay where we had two juvenile eagles frolicking on some old wood along the beach near a nest. Then we made our way to race rocks ecological reserve which is the second oldest lighthouse in British Columbia built in 1860… There we has about 20 to 30 stellar sea lions hundreds of harbor seals no elephant seals today but flat calm water and absolutely stunning scenery looking south towards the Olympic mountain range we then from there headed east all the way to San Juan Island near Henry Island where we had J pod K pod and most of L pod in beautiful groups offering fantastic visuals with lots of exceptional vocalizing on the underwater microphone on board Gold wing. We saw several different animals but the K 20 cappuccino and K 40 raggedy provided excellent sights. We also had high-speed porpoising. unfortunately we had to make a way home back to Victoria our time was up we were three hours 50 min. approximately on this trip which was an extension of our regular 3 1/2 hours but made it all happen and it was amazing!! Looking forward to the afternoon trip with whales maybe near active pass!?!?
